The construction of the Central Expressway Project (E4), which the government says is of vital importance to provide improved travel conditions for long distance traffic, thus relieving congestion on the A1 road will commence in May this year.

Higher Education and Highways Minister Lakshman Kiriella yesterday said the land acquisition process was underway from Galagedara for the Colombo-Kandy Expressway project. Minister Kiriella said, "The construction will start in May this year after completing the land acquisition."

The construction of the first stage of the Central Expressway had commenced at Puwakwetiya-Kadawatha with the participation of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe last year.

The highway will be 178 km long. The work schedule is as follows: The first stage covering 37 km will be from Kadawatha to Kosinna and Kosinna to Meerigama; from Mirigama to Kurunegla 39.7 km; from Mirigama to Ambepussa 9.3 km; Potuhera to Galagedara 32.5 km and Kurunegala to Ridigama 12.5 km; from Ridigama to Melsiripura 18.9 km, from Melsiripura to Galewela 16.2 km and Galewela to Dambulla 12.7 km.

In addition, Kiriella said that many foreign investors would invest in Sri Lanka this year while the government of Japan had expressed its willingness to invest in Sri Lanka’s Kandy City development project.
